Assertive
An utterance that conveys information or states a fact. For example, 'The earth orbits the sun.'
Directive
An utterance that attempts to get the interlocutor to do something. For example, 'Please close the door.'
Commissive
An utterance that commits the speaker to some future action. For example, 'I promise to help you tomorrow.'
Expressive
An utterance that expresses the speaker's emotions or attitudes. For example, 'Congratulations on your new job!'
Declarative
An utterance that changes the state of the world by its utterance. For example, 'I now pronounce you husband and wife.'
Question
An utterance that solicits information from the interlocutor. For example, 'What time is it?'
Request
A form of directive which politely asks someone to perform an action. For example, 'Could you please lend me your book?'
Offer
A commissive act in which the speaker proposes to carry out an action for someone else. For example, 'I can pick you up at eight.'
Refusal
A commissive act where the speaker indicates they will not perform a certain action. For example, 'I'm afraid I can't join you for dinner.'
Suggestion
A directive act meant to influence the listener's actions by proposing a possible course of action. For example, 'You should try the new Italian restaurant.'
Apology
An expressive act in which the speaker expresses regret for an action or occurrence. For example, 'I'm sorry I forgot your birthday.'
Appreciation
An expressive act that shows gratitude or recognition for someone's action or event. For example, 'Thank you for your help!'
