Bypassing the Critical Faculty
Getting past the subject's conscious analytical thinking to communicate with the subconscious mind. By engendering a hypnotic state, the hypnotist can bypass critical analysis and introduce new concepts directly to the subconscious.
Fractionation
Repeating the hypnotic induction process several times. The hypnotist brings the subject in and out of the hypnotic state to deepen the level of hypnotic trance with each iteration.
Suggestibility
The subject's propensity to respond to suggestions. During hypnosis, the hypnotist uses carefully structured suggestions to encourage the subject to accept and act on ideas for therapeutic change.
Rapport Building
Establishing trust and a connection with the subject. The hypnotist uses active listening and mirroring techniques to make the client feel understood and comfortable, which is essential for effective hypnotic suggestion.
Progressive Relaxation
A technique to relax the body gradually and reduce mental stress. The hypnotist instructs the subject to relax each part of the body, often starting with the toes and moving upwards, to facilitate deeper hypnotic induction.
Utilization
Using the subject's existing beliefs, habits, and behaviors to enhance hypnotic responsiveness. The hypnotist incorporates the individual's experiences into the hypnosis session to tailor suggestions more effectively.
Anchoring
Creating a sensory stimulus associated with the hypnotic state. The hypnotist sets a 'trigger' (like a touch or a word) that can re-induce the hypnotic state or a specific emotion or behavior later on.
Visualization
Encouraging the subject to form mental images to enhance relaxation and receptivity. The hypnotist guides the subject to imagine a calming place or scene, increasing the subject's immersion in the hypnotic process.
Regression
Taking the subject back to earlier stages of life or even to perceived past lives. Hypnotists use regression to uncover hidden memories that may be related to present issues, but the validity of these memories can be questionable.
Focused Attention
Concentrating the subject's attention on a specific thought, object, or sensation. Through guided imagery or verbal cues, the hypnotist helps the subject become absorbed in the experience, reducing peripheral awareness.
Positive Reinforcement
Validating the subject's progress to deepen the hypnotic state. The hypnotist praises successful completion of steps or acknowledgment of suggestions, which enhances confidence and suggestibility.
Post-Hypnotic Suggestions
Suggestions given during hypnosis that the subject will carry out after emerging from the hypnotic state. The hypnotist provides cues or triggers that initiate the suggested behaviors once the subject is no longer hypnotized.
