Contact Mind Reading (or Muscle Reading)
The mentalist holds the wrist of a participant and 'reads' involuntary muscle movements to deduce thoughts or actions.
The Invisible Touch
The mentalist creates the illusion that they are touching a spectator from a distance, using suggestion or other methods like hidden assistants.
Cold Reading
A series of techniques used to give the impression of knowing personal details about someone, using high-probability guesses, quick feedback, and general statements.
Peak
The mentalist covertly views part of the secret information. This can be done with specially designed devices or through natural handling of the objects involved.
The Invisible Deck
A card trick where the mentalist 'predicts' the card selected by the participant, made possible by using a specially prepared deck with paired cards that are adhesive on one side.
Pencil Reading (or Pencil Pushing)
This technique involves the magician closely observing the movement of a pencil or pen as the participant writes something down, to deduce what is being written.
Nail Writing
Using a small writing device attached to the thumb (nail writer), the mentalist secretly writes down a prediction or piece of information during the performance.
Hot Reading
A technique where the mentalist has prior knowledge about the person or the situation, often acquired by secret or pre-show research.
The Center Tear
This technique involves tearing up a piece of paper that contains a written secret, but retaining the center piece where the information is written and secretly reading it.
Book Test
The performer has a spectator select a word from a book and then reveals the word through apparent mental powers, often facilitated by prior knowledge of the book's contents or gimmicked books.
Dual Reality
A technique where the audience and the participant experience two different realities. The participant is in on the trick and acts accordingly, while the audience believes that a mind-reading act is happening.
Psychometry
The performer claims to be able to give readings or reveal personal history about an object by holding it in their hands, often involving cold reading or pre-acquired information.
The Classic Force
A sleight-of-hand technique where the mentalist influences the spectator to choose a specific card in a way that appears to be a free choice.
Swami Gimmick
A small writing device, similar to a nail writer, that is used to make predictions. It is discreetly attached to the performer's thumb or finger.
Equivocation
Also known as the 'Magician's Choice,' this technique gives the illusion of free choice while the mentalist actually controls the outcome.
Impression Devices
Tools used by mentalists to capture the imprint of a writing or drawing made by a participant, allowing them to later reveal what was written without actually seeing it at the time.
Billet Reading
The magician uses misdirection to secretly peek at information written on a slip of paper by the participant, often involving a switch or clever folding technique.
Spoon Bending
Often presented as a demonstration of psychic powers, metal bending is accomplished through physical methods like misdirection and sleight of hand, or special pre-bent spoons.
