Moulage
A French term for a draping method that creates a skin-tight pattern. Used mainly for custom fitting and haute couture.
Fluting
Intentionally creating wavy, ribbon-like folds in the fabric through draping. Used as a decorative texture especially in hems and necklines.
Pleating
Folding fabric in a series of regular, parallel ridges held by stitching or pressing. Used for adding volume and decorative texture.
Cowl Draping
Creating hanging, rounded folds around the neckline or other parts of a garment, achieved by cutting the fabric on the bias. Used for decorative necklines and soft silhouettes.
Flat Draping
Creating the design of a garment by manipulating fabric on a flat surface instead of a 3D form. Used for simpler designs and geometric shapes.
Bias Draping
Draping fabric diagonally on the cross-grain to utilize its greatest stretch and drape. Often used for fluid, body-conscious garments.
Gathering
Pulling threads to draw fabric together, creating fullness and ruffles. Often used in skirts, sleeves, and waistbands.
Shirring
Similar to gathering, but incorporates multiple rows of parallel gathers using elastic thread. Used for stretchy, textured garments.
Dart Manipulation
Moving the position and direction of darts to change a garment's shape and fit. Used commonly in fitted clothing, like dresses and jackets.
Toga Draping
A technique that involves wrapping fabric around the body in a single piece, resembling ancient Roman attire. Commonly used in flowing, elegant designs.
Twist Draping
A technique where fabric is twisted before being attached to the rest of the garment, creating spirals or torque effects. Used for artistic, modern looks.
Draping on the Stand
The process of positioning and pinning fabric onto a mannequin to create the pattern pieces for a garment. Commonly used in the initial design phase.
Balloon Draping
Cinching the fabric at certain points to create a 'balloon' effect, with billowy shapes and fullness. Often seen in sleeves, hems, and dresses.
Ruching
Gathering fabric in a repeated pattern to create ripples, often used to give texture to a garment or to disguise imperfections.
On-Grain Draping
Aligning fabric so that its warp and weft threads are at a right angle to each other. Used to ensure the garment hangs properly without twisting.
