Flashcards
0/12
Bleaching
Sequence: Chemical treatment to remove natural color from the yarn. End Product: Bleached yarn, which is pure white and ready for dyeing or finishing.
Twisting
Sequence: Twisting two or more single yarns to create a plied yarn. End Product: Twisted yarn with increased strength and durability.
Spinning
Sequence: Roving is drawn out and twisted to create yarn. End Product: Spun yarn, ready for knitting, weaving, or other uses.
Winding
Sequence: Transformation of spun yarn into suitable large packages. End Product: Wound packages that could be dyed, knitted, or woven.
Carding
Sequence: Alignment of fibers into a web, which is then condensed into a sliver. End Product: Carded sliver for spinning.
Dyeing
Sequence: Application of color on yarn through chemical interaction with the fiber. End Product: Dyed yarn, available in a variety of colors.
Texturing
Sequence: The use of chemical or thermal means to give synthetic yarns a greater volume and elasticity. End Product: Textured yarn with improved thermal insulation and aesthetic properties.
Sizing
Sequence: Coating the yarn to enhance its strength and reduce abrasion during weaving. End Product: Sized yarn, ready to be warped and woven.
Drawing
Sequence: Parallelization and blending of fibers by repeatedly drafting the slivers. End Product: Drawn sliver, more uniform in thickness.
Combing
Sequence: Further straightening of fibers by removal of short fibers and impurities, following carding. End Product: Combed sliver, with higher quality and uniformity than carded.
Roving
Sequence: Slivers are drafted and twisted slightly to form a roving. End Product: Roving, a thinner and more twisted form of fiber strand, ready for spinning into yarn.
Mercerizing
Sequence: Treating cotton yarn with caustic soda, resulting in swelling of the fiber. End Product: Mercerized yarn with increased luster, strength, and dye affinity.
