Fabric Weight and Density

Flashcards
0/15
Drape
A term describing how a fabric hangs and falls, influenced by the fabric's weight, density, and stiffness.
Thread Count
The density of threads in a fabric, measured by counting the number of threads contained in one square inch of fabric.
GSM (Grams per Square Meter)
A metric measurement of the weight of fabric, indicating grams per square meter. It's measured by weighing a standard size of fabric.
Cover Factor
A numerical value that indicates how much of the surface area of a fabric is covered by fibers, influenced by the yarns' density and fineness.
Density
The mass of material per unit volume, commonly measured in g/cm³ for fabrics and calculated using the mass divided by the volume.
Weave Density
The number of threads per unit area in a woven fabric, influencing fabric weight, strength, and texture.
Fabric Fineness
The quality of the fibers in terms of diameter and fineness, often measured in microns or by the fiber’s grade.
Tex
A unit of measure for the linear mass density of fibers and yarns, given as the weight in grams of 1,000 meters of yarn.
Bulk Density
The mass of a fibrous material (like batting or insulation) per unit volume that includes both the fibers and the air space between fibers.
Momme
A non-metric unit used to measure the weight of silk fabrics, equivalent to the weight in pounds of a piece of fabric measuring 45 inches by 100 yards.
Compression Resilience
The ability of a textile, especially non-woven fabrics, to recover from compression, related to fabric density and fiber resilience.
Ply
A term referring to the number of layers or threads that make up the fabric, affecting the fabric's thickness and weight.
OSY (Ounces per Square Yard)
A measurement of the weight of fabric in the imperial system, indicating ounces per square yard. Typically measured by weighing a one-yard cut of fabric.
Fabric Hand
A qualitative measure of the feel, weight, and softness of fabric, generally assessed by touch and experience rather than a quantitative measure.
Denier
A unit of measurement for the linear mass density of fibers, calculated by the mass in grams of 9,000 meters of the fiber.
