Gate
The area where passengers wait before boarding their flight
Runway
A long paved strip at an airport used for the takeoff and landing of aircraft
Taxiway
A path on an airport connecting runways with ramps, hangars, terminals and other facilities
Terminal
A building at an airport where passengers transfer between ground transportation and the facilities that allow them to board and disembark from aircraft
Concourse
A large open area within an airport terminal, often housing several gates
Control Tower
The building in an airport from which air traffic control coordinates the movement of aircraft on the ground and through controlled airspace
Tarmac
The term used to describe the paved area around an airport terminal where aircraft are parked, usually referred to as the apron
Baggage Claim
The area where passengers retrieve their checked baggage after landing
Boarding Pass
A document provided by an airline during check-in, granting a passenger permission to enter the secure area of an airport and board their flight
Check-In
The process by which a passenger confirms their attendance on a flight and often receives a boarding pass
Duty-Free
A retail store that sells products without local import duty and taxes, typically found in international airport terminals
Layover
A short stay between connecting flights, often requiring passengers to wait within the airport
Security Checkpoint
A place at an airport where passengers are screened for prohibited items before being allowed to enter the departure area
Customs
The government service responsible for administering and collecting the duties levied by a country on imports and exports
Direct Flight
A flight with no scheduled stops between the departure and destination points
Connecting Flight
A sequence of flights where passengers transfer at intermediate stops before reaching their final destination
Overhead Bin
A storage compartment above passengers' heads in an airplane cabin used for carry-on luggage
Departure Lounge
A seating area in an airport where passengers wait to board their flights after passing through the security checkpoint
Lost and Found
An office in an airport where lost items are stored until claimed by their owners
Immigration
The checkpoint where government officials verify the legal right of entry for passengers coming from other countries
Jet Bridge
An enclosed, movable connector which extends from an airport terminal gate to an aircraft, allowing passengers to board and disembark without going outside
Ground Crew
The staff at an airport responsible for operations on the ground, such as baggage handling and aircraft servicing
Boarding Time
The time at which passengers are expected to start boarding the aircraft
Carry-On
Item of luggage each passenger is allowed to take into the aircraft cabin
Deplaning
The process of passengers exiting an aircraft after it has landed
First Officer
Also known as the co-pilot, this is the second-in-command to the Captain on a flight
Air Marshal
A law enforcement agent who travels incognito to prevent and deal with criminal activity on flights
Airstairs
A set of steps which can be moved up to an aircraft's door to allow passengers to board or disembark when jet bridges aren't available
Flight Deck
The area where the pilot and co-pilot control the aircraft, typically at the front and also known as the cockpit
Queue
A line of passengers waiting for services at an airport, such as check-in or security
