Copyright
A legal right granted by the government giving creators exclusive control over the use and distribution of their original works.
Fair Use Doctrine
A legal doctrine allowing limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the rights holders, commonly applied in commentary, criticism, or scholarship.
Patent
An exclusive right granted for an invention, which is a product or a process offering a new way of doing something or a new technical solution to a problem.
Trademark
A recognizable sign, design, or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source from those of others.
Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)
A U.S. law that criminalizes the production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures that control access to copyrighted works.
Trade Secret
A formula, practice, process, design, instrument, pattern, or compilation of information which is not generally known or reasonably ascertainable, by which a business can obtain an economic advantage over competitors.
Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)
A contractual agreement in which one party agrees to keep certain information confidential and not to disclose it to others without proper authorization.
End User License Agreement (EULA)
A legal contract between the manufacturer or author and the user of an application or software, outlining the rights and responsibilities of both parties.
Counterfeit
A fraudulent imitation of something else, often violating trademark laws by reproducing products or packaging without authorization.
Cybersquatting
The act of registering, trafficking in, or using an Internet domain name with the intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else.
Berne Convention
An international agreement governing copyright, which ensures that the rights of authors in their literary and artistic works are recognized worldwide.
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
A regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy in the European Union and the European Economic Area, which also addresses the transfer of personal data outside the EU and EEA.
Right to Publicity
The right of an individual to control and profit from the commercial use of their name, image, likeness, or other unequivocal aspects of one's identity.
Creative Commons
A non-profit organization that provides free licenses for creators to use when making their work available to the public.
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) File Sharing

DMCA Takedown Notice

Reverse Engineering

A legal permission given by the holder of a copyright for music, allowing someone else to use the musical work in various ways, such as public performance or reproduction.
