A legal right that grants the creator of original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution, usually for a limited time, with the intention of enabling the creator to receive compensation for their intellectual investment. Examples include books, music, and software code.
Trade Secret
A type of intellectual property in the form of a formula, practice, process, design, instrument, pattern, or compilation of information which is not generally known or reasonably ascertainable, by which a business can obtain an economic advantage over competitors or customers. Examples include recipes for food products, algorithms, and customer databases.
Utility Model
Similar to patents, utility models protect inventions. However, they are usually for minor inventions with a shorter protection period compared to patents and typically have a simpler application process. Examples might include small mechanical devices or tools.
Patent
A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention, which is a product or a process that provides a new way of doing something, or offers a new technical solution to a problem. Examples include pharmaceuticals, technology gadgets, and mechanical devices.
Industrial Design
Protection for the unique visual design of objects that are not purely utilitarian. An industrial design consists of the creation of a shape, configuration or composition of pattern or color, or combination of pattern and color in three-dimensional form containing aesthetic value. Examples include furniture designs, jewelry, and consumer electronics.
Integrated Circuits
Intellectual property protection for the design of original integrated circuits (IC), which are the unique layout or 'topography' of the interconnected elements and electronic circuits in semiconductor products. Examples include microchips used in all sorts of electronic devices.
Geographical Indication
A sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Examples include Champagne (sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France), Darjeeling Tea, and Parmigiano-Reggiano (cheese from Italy).
Trade Dress
The visual appearance of a product or its packaging that signifies the source of the product to consumers. It can include features such as size, shape, color, texture, graphics, and appearance. Examples include the shape of a Coca-Cola bottle or the decor of a chain restaurant.
Plant Variety Protection
A form of intellectual property rights that gives breeders exclusive control over new genetically-engineered plant varieties for a number of years. To qualify, a variety must be new, distinct, uniform, and stable. Examples include patented apple varieties, ornamental plants, and genetically modified crops.
