Tengu
Bird-like demons, traditionally depicted with human and avian characteristics, known to be skilled warriors and protectors of the forests.
Futakuchi-onna
A woman with two mouths – one on her face and another on the back of her head hidden by her hair; the second mouth often speaks when the woman does not or eats voraciously.
Nue
A chimera-like creature with the face of a monkey, the body of a raccoon dog, the legs of a tiger, and a snake for a tail, known to bring misfortune or illness.
Bakeneko
A cat yokai said to have supernatural powers, including shape-shifting into humans, and is sometimes depicted carrying a cursed flame.
Oni
Ogre-like creatures often portrayed with red or blue skin, known for their incredible strength and wielding heavy clubs.
Noppera-bo
Faceless ghosts that look like humans, they scare people by revealing their featureless faces often on dark streets or in desolate places.
Ame-onna
A female spirit associated with rain, she is often depicted soaking wet and said to cause or appear during rainy weather.
Kuchisake-onna
A once beautiful woman turned yokai, mutilated by her husband and returned as a malevolent spirit with a slit mouth, asking victims if she is beautiful before attacking.
Jorogumo
A spider yokai that can change its appearance into that of a seductive woman to lure and entrap humans.
Tanuki
Raccoon dog spirits known for their shape-shifting abilities, particularly to deceive humans, also associated with prosperity and generosity.
Yuki-onna
A ghostly snow woman who is known to appear in snowstorms and is said to lead people to their doom or freeze them with her breath.
Kitsune
Fox spirits with the ability to shape-shift, often into beautiful women; they are intelligent beings and can be mischievous or malevolent.
Gashadokuro
Giant skeletons formed from the bones of people who died in battle or of hunger, they roam after midnight, grabbing lone travelers and biting off their heads.

The spirit of a mother who died in childbirth or who died leaving young children behind; she is often seen as a crying woman.

A mythical spider-like creature which was said to live in the mountains, known for entrapping warriors and being defeated by the hero Minamoto no Yorimitsu.

Spirits that appear human during the day but at night their necks stretch to great lengths to frighten or spy on people.
Yama-uba
An old, witch-like woman who lives in the mountains and is said to eat those who are lured into her home, often depicted with magical abilities.
Kawa-no-kami
River deity or spirit, considered to watch over and protect the waterways in Japan, often depicted with a serpentine or dragon-like form.
Kappa
A water creature that resembles a human-turtle hybrid, known for challenging humans to sumo wrestling matches and being obsessed with cucumbers.
Umi-bozu
A sea spirit known for destroying ships and drowning sailors, often appearing suddenly from calm seas; depicted as a massive, shadowy figure.
