Koschei the Deathless
An evil figure incapable of dying due to his soul (or death) being hidden away. He often kidnaps the hero's wife in Russian fairy tales.
Alkonost
A mythical bird with the head of a beautiful woman. Alkonost's song is so enchanting that anyone who hears it will forget everything else.
Bannik
The bathhouse spirit who is known to predict the future. People used to turn to him for divination by giving offerings.
Leshy
A forest spirit who protects animals and the forest. Leshies have the ability to change their size and can lead travelers astray.
Kikimora
A female house spirit known for causing nightmares. Kikimoras live behind the stove or in the cellar and are usually considered bad omens.
Chort
A malevolent demon similar to the devil. Chorts are known for making pacts with humans and for their trickster nature.
Baba Yaga
A witch-like character who flies around in a mortar, wields a pestle, and dwells deep in the forest in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs.
Vampir
Creatures similar to vampires in Western folklore. Slavic vampires are said to be reanimated corpses that consume blood and can transform into bats.
Drekavac
Derived from the souls of unbaptized children. These restless spirits cry out in the night and can predict someone's imminent death.
Zmey Gorynych
A dragon-like creature, often depicted with three heads, each of which spits fire. Zmey Gorynych is a common adversary in folklore tales and hero myths.
Skogsrå
A forest entity, often described as a beautiful woman with a tail hidden under her clothes. She is considered a guardian of animals and can control them.
Psoglav
A demonic creature with the body of a human, legs of a horse, and a dog's head with iron teeth and a single eye. Psoglavs are believed to dig up graves and feed on the dead.
Vila
Spirit associated with the wind, often depicted as a beautiful woman with great healing and prophetic powers, as well as the ability to shapeshift.
Vodyanoy
Male water spirits associated with lakes, ponds, wells, and rivers. They are said to cause drownings and can drag people down into their underwater dwellings.
Poludnica
A noon demon or a midday spirit. Poludnica is said to cause heatstroke and madness to people working at midday in the fields during summer.
Rusalka
Water nymphs or spirits who are typically associated with lakes or rivers. In some tales, they are souls of young women who died in or near the water.
Sudice
Fates in Slavic mythology similar to Greek Moirai. They control destiny and are often depicted as three old women who spin the threads of life.
Morozko
Known as Father Frost or Jack Frost, is a winter deity who personifies winter's chill. He is often described as a frosty old man.
Mavka
Forest spirits that resemble beautiful young women with long hair but lack a backside. Mavka are often associated with death and seen as omens.
Domovoi
A protective house spirit. Domovoi are believed to protect the home and can either help or hinder the household depending on how well they are treated.
