Fenrir
A monstrous wolf and son of Loki destined to play a major role during Ragnarok. He is foretold to kill Odin, but will in turn be slain by Odin's son, Víðarr.
Jörmungandr
The Midgard Serpent, also a child of Loki, is a sea creature so large that it encircles the Earth. During Ragnarok, it is said to battle Thor resulting in the death of both.
Sleipnir
An eight-legged horse ridden by Odin, Sleipnir is considered the best of all horses. Sleipnir is another child of Loki, borne by the stallion Svaðilfari.
Gjallarhorn
The horn blown by Heimdall, the watchman of the gods, as a warning signal or to announce the onset of Ragnarok.
Trolls
Large, brutish creatures that are typically described as both slow-witted and quick to anger; often antagonists in Norse tales.
Dwarves
A race of skilled craftsmen and metalworkers, they live beneath the ground and are associated with crafting many legendary Norse artifacts like Thor's hammer, Mjölnir.
Draugr
Undead creatures with superhuman strength, known to guard their treasures, and able to increase their size at will.
Valkyries
Female figures who serve Odin by selecting those who may die in battle and those who may live. They escort the souls of heroes slain in battle to Valhalla.
Elves
Supernatural beings with magical powers and incomparable beauty. They are divided into light and dark: Ljosalfar and Dokkalfar.
Aesir
One of the two main tribes of deities, the Aesir are associated with war and government, with Odin as their chief.
Vanir
The other tribe of gods known for their connection to fertility, wisdom, and the ability to see the future. They are sometimes at war with the Aesir.
Fossegrim
A water spirit who plays enchanting songs on the fiddle, they teach humans music if offered the proper gift.
Huginn and Muninn
Odin’s two ravens which fly all over the world to bring information to the god. Their names mean 'thought' and 'memory,' respectively.
Norns
The three beings of fate who control the destiny of gods and men. Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld are akin to the Fates from Greek mythology.
Freyja's cats
Goddess Freyja rides a chariot drawn by two cats. The cats are said to be gifts from Thor, and their names are not definitively known.
Berserkers
Warriors who fought with a trance-like fury and are often associated with the bear or wolf. Their name gave rise to the English word 'berserk'.
Huldra
A seductive forest creature related to the troll, often depicted with the tail of a cow or fox. Huldras are known for their alluring song and typically benevolent nature.
Yggdrasil
The world tree, a cosmic ash that connects the Nine Worlds of Norse cosmology, considered the most holy of all things and central to the Norse conception of the universe.
Kraken
A legendary sea monster of gigantic size that is said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland. It is often depicted attacking ships.
Mjölnir
The enchanted hammer wielded by Thor, capable of leveling mountains. It is a symbol of protection and consecration.
