Scale Factor
The scale factor is the ratio of the lengths of corresponding sides in two similar geometric figures. When two shapes are similar, one is an enlargement or reduction of the other based on the scale factor.
Congruence vs Similarity
Congruence and similarity are both relationships between two shapes, but congruence implies that all corresponding sides and angles are identical, whereas similarity only requires that angles are identical and sides are proportional but not necessarily of the same length.
Similar Triangles
Similar triangles have the same shape; their corresponding angles are equal, and their sides are proportional. If two triangles are similar, the ratio of any pair of corresponding sides is called the scale factor of the triangles.
Similarity
Similarity in geometry refers to the relationship between shapes that have the same form, with corresponding angles equal and corresponding sides proportional. Similar shapes can differ only in size, not in shape.
Dilation
Dilation is a transformation that changes the size of a figure but not its shape. It's determined by a center point and a scale factor. All points on the figure are moved away from or towards the center point proportionally according to the scale factor.
Proportions
Proportions express the equality of two ratios or fractions. In similar shapes, corresponding sides and angles are in proportion, meaning the ratios of corresponding sides are equal.
