Reflection
Reflection creates a mirror image of an original figure. This occurs over a line called the line of reflection. It is a rigid motion and properties include equivalent lengths and angles, flipped orientation, and equal distance from the line of reflection for corresponding points.
Dilation
Dilation is a transformation that changes the size of a figure by a scale factor, while maintaining its shape. It is not a rigid motion, as it can either enlarge or reduce figures. It is characterized by the multiplication of all distances between points by the same scale factor.
Translation
A translation slides an object a fixed distance in a given direction. It is a rigid motion, meaning it does not change the shape or size of the figure. Properties include maintaining orientation and equal distance movement for all points of the figure.
Rotation
Rotation turns a figure around a fixed point called the center of rotation. Angles are preserved and distances from the center of rotation to any point on the figure remain the same. It is also a rigid motion.
