Slide
A musical ornamentation where a note slides from the initial pitch to the following note.
Arpeggio
The notes of a chord played in succession, either ascending or descending.
Mordent
A single rapid alternation between a note, the note below it, and then a return to the original note.
Acciaccatura
A very short grace note that is 'crushed' into the main note and quickly released.
Ornamental Trill
A trill that starts on the upper auxiliary note instead of the main note.
Glissando
A continuous slide upwards or downwards between two notes.
Trill
A rapid alternation between two adjacent notes, usually a semi-tone or whole-tone apart.
Turn
A sequence of four notes that encircles a central note in the pattern: upper, central, lower, central.
Nachschlag
An embellishment consisting of one or two grace notes added after the principal note.
Grace Note
A brief, non-rhythmic note added before a main note for embellishment.
Portamento
A mild glissando between two pitches for expressive effect.
Appoggiatura
A grace note performed before a main note and taking some of its time value, which creates a dissonant tension before resolving.
