M'Naghten Rule
Determines insanity by whether the defendant knew right from wrong at the time of the crime.
Irresistible Impulse Test
Considers if a mental disease prevented the defendant from resisting a criminal impulse, despite understanding its wrongfulness.
Durham Rule or Product Test
States that a defendant is not criminally responsible if the unlawful act was the product of a mental disease or defect.
Model Penal Code Test for Legal Insanity
Claims a defendant is not responsible for criminal conduct if, at the time of such conduct, as a result of mental disease or defect, they lack substantial capacity to appreciate the criminality of their conduct or to conform their conduct to the requirements of the law.
Federal Insanity Defense Reform Act of 1984
Modifies the insanity defense to require clear and convincing evidence that, at the time of the crime, due to a severe mental disease or defect, the defendant was unable to appreciate the nature and quality or the wrongfulness of their acts.
Guilty but Mentally Ill Verdict
Allows for a defendant to be found guilty while acknowledging mental illness. They receive a criminal sentence but are provided with mental health treatment.
Diminished Capacity
A defendant claims a lack of understanding or an inability to form intent due to mental impairment, reducing conviction to a lesser offense.
Competency to Stand Trial
Assesses if a defendant has the mental capacity to understand the proceedings against them and can participate adequately in their defense.
