Russian Wheat Aphid
A pest that causes rolling and streaking of wheat leaves, and can reduce yields severely. Affected crops are wheat and barley. Control strategies include resistant varieties, chemical controls, and natural predators.
Boll Weevil
Small, grayish weevil that feeds on cotton buds and flowers. The primary affected crop is cotton. Control methods include pheromone traps, early planting, and insect growth regulators.
Aphid
Small sap-sucking insects, usually green or black, can transmit plant viruses. Affected crops include wheat, barley, and potatoes. Common control strategies include insecticidal soap, neonicotinoid insecticides, and releasing beneficial insects like ladybugs.
Whitefly
Tiny, white, flying insects that feed on plant sap and can cause wilting and yellowing of leaves. Affected crops include tomatoes, cabbage, and citrus. Control strategies often include insecticidal soaps, yellow sticky traps, and reflective mulches.
Corn Earworm
A larva of a moth that feeds on corn kernels as well as a wide array of other plants. Affected crops include corn, tomato, and cotton. Common control strategies include crop rotation, biological control with Trichogramma spp., and Bt corn varieties.
Colorado Potato Beetle
A hard shelled beetle that is yellow with black stripes, mainly affects potato plants but also feeds on eggplants and peppers. Common control strategies include crop rotation, beetle-resistant potato varieties, and chemical pesticides like neonicotinoids.
Fall Armyworm
Caterpillars that consume large portions of leaves and can cause significant damage to crops. Affected crops include corn, rice, and sorghum. Control strategies include insecticides, using Bt crops, and natural predators like wasps.
Soybean Cyst Nematode
A microscopic worm that attacks the roots of soybean plants, causing yellowing and stunting. Affected crop is primarily soybean. Management includes crop rotation, resistant soybean varieties, and nematicides.
European Corn Borer
A type of caterpillar that tunnels into corn stalks, causing plants to break and yield to decrease. Affected crops include corn and peppers. Control strategies involve crop rotation, Bt corn varieties, and pheromone traps.
Japanese Beetle
A metallic green beetle with copper wings that feeds on leaves and flowers of over 300 different plants. Affected crops include soybeans, grapes, and stone fruits. Control is achieved through pheromone traps, handpicking, and chemical insecticides.
Cotton Bollworm
A caterpillar that feeds on cotton but can also affect many other crops. Affected crops include cotton, corn, and tomatoes. Control is achieved using Bt cotton, chemical insecticides, and biological control agents.
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug
An invasive pest that feeds on fruits and causes cosmetic damage that can lead to secondary infections. Commonly affected crops include apples, peaches, and tomatoes. Control methods include sealing buildings, pesticide applications, and natural predators like parasitic wasps.
Diamondback Moth
A moth whose caterpillars feed on cruciferous crops causing holes in leaves. Affected crops are brassicas like cabbage and broccoli. Control methods include crop rotation, biological control with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), and insecticides.
Thrips
Tiny, slender insects that scrape and feed on plant tissue, often transmitting viruses. Affected crops include onions, peppers, and strawberries. Management includes reflective mulches, spinosad, and predatory mites.
Western Corn Rootworm
A beetle larva that feeds on corn roots, leading to reduced water and nutrient uptake and can cause lodging of plants. Affected crop is corn. Management strategies include crop rotation, use of Bt corn, and soil insecticides.
