Gather
A technique used to draw fabric together, creating fullness in the garment.
Interfacing
A piece of fabric used between layers to provide shape and support to neckline, collar, waistband, cuff and other areas.
Hem
The finished edge of a piece of fabric that is folded under and sewn to prevent fraying.
Lining
The process of adding a layer of fabric to the inside of a garment to provide a clean finish, hide construction details, and sometimes add warmth.
Ease
The difference between the body measurement and the garment measurement, which allows for movement and comfort within the garment.
Pleat
A fold in the fabric that is either pressed, ironed, or sewn into place.
Bias
The direction on a piece of woven fabric at 45 degrees to the warp and weft where the fabric is most stretchy.
Armhole
The opening in the garment to which the sleeve is attached.
Nap
A layer of fiber on the surface of fabric, such as velvet or corduroy, that has a direction which must be considered when laying out pattern pieces.
Basting
Temporary long stitches used to hold fabric in place before final sewing, which are removed after the seam is sewn.
Seam
A line where two pieces of fabric are sewn together in a garment.
Dart
A folded and sewn wedge of fabric that helps to shape a garment to the body.
Serger
A type of sewing machine that overlocks the edge of fabric to prevent fraying and gives a finished look.
Understitching
A row of stitching used to keep the facing or lining from rolling to the outside of the garment.
Pattern
A template from which the parts of a garment are traced onto fabric before cutting and assembling.
Selvedge
The tightly woven edge of a fabric that runs parallel to the warp, preventing the fabric from unraveling.
Buttonhole
A small opening in the fabric that is bound with small stitches to prevent fraying and allows a button to pass through.
Grainline
An arrow on a pattern piece that indicates the direction the pattern should be placed on the fabric, relative to the weave.
Notch
A mark made on the fabric to help align pieces to be sewn together, ensuring proper construction.
Topstitching
A row of stitching seen from the outside of a garment, usually parallel to a seam, to provide decoration or reinforcement.
