Rim Light
A type of backlighting that outlines the subject's edges with light, separating them from the background and creating a rim or halo effect.
Backlight
Lighting that illuminates the subject from behind, often creating a separation between the subject and the background.
Catchlight
A light source that causes a specular highlight in a subject's eye in a photograph.
Ambient Light
Natural light that is already present in a scene before any additional lighting is added by the photographer.
High-Key Lighting
A lighting setup with very little contrast between shadows and highlights, providing a bright and even look.
Flash Sync Speed
The maximum shutter speed at which the camera can be used with a flash, with the entire frame exposed to the flash burst at once.
Broad Lighting
A lighting technique where the subject's face is turned such that the larger part of their face (the side turned towards the camera) is well lit.
ISO
The level of sensitivity of your camera to available light. A higher ISO number increases the exposure but can also increase the noise in the image.
Exposure
The amount of light per unit area reaching the photographic film or image sensor, determined by shutter speed, lens aperture, and scene luminance.
Hard Light
Type of lighting that creates strong shadows and high contrast, emphasizing texture and edges.
Color Temperature
A characteristic of visible light measured in Kelvin (K), describing the hue of a specific type of light source. It affects how white your camera perceives the scene.
Aperture
A term defining the opening in a camera lens through which light passes to enter the camera body. It's crucial for controlling the depth of field and exposure.
Fill Light
Secondary light source used in photography to reduce the contrast of a scene and provide illumination for the shadows.
Short Lighting
A lighting technique where the subject's face is turned such that the smaller part of their face is well lit, often used to create a slimming effect on the face.
Butterfly Lighting
A portrait lighting pattern that creates a shadow under the nose resembling a butterfly. Often used for glamour shots and to accentuate cheekbones.
Low-Key Lighting
A lighting setup that produces a dramatic mood with a high contrast between the brightest and darkest parts of the image, with deep shadows.
Soft Light
Type of lighting that reduces shadows and contrast, often creating a more flattering and even light for subjects.
Light Meter
A device used to measure the intensity of light to determine the correct exposure for a photograph.
Shutter Speed
The amount of time the camera's shutter is open and allowing light to hit the sensor. It affects motion blur and exposure.
Key Light
The main light source in a lighting setup that defines the most significant parts of the subject.
