Half Double Crochet (hdc)
A stitch that's taller than a single crochet but shorter than a double crochet, used for a variety of fabrics that need more drape than single crochet.
Single Crochet (sc)
A basic crochet stitch producing a tight, dense fabric. It's used in a variety of projects from amigurumi to dishcloths.
Chain Stitch (ch)
The foundation of most crochet projects, this stitch appears as a series of V-shaped links. It's commonly used to start crochet work and to create spaces within patterns.
Slip Stitch (sl st)
A method to join stitches together, creating a very short fabric that can be used to create a seam, join rounds, or as a decorative element.
Double Crochet (dc)
A fundamental crochet stitch that's twice the height of a single crochet, resulting in a softer and more flexible fabric, used in sweaters, blankets, etc.
Bobble Stitch
A textured, puffy stitch made by combining several double crochets into one, often used for decorative elements in blankets and clothing.
Popcorn Stitch
This stitch results in a puffy texture similar to bobbles, created by making several stitches in one place and then joining them, ideal for adding 3D texture to projects.
Picot Stitch
A small loop created by chaining stitches and then slip stitching into the same or adjacent stitch, adding a decorative element to a project's edge.
V-Stitch
Combination of a double crochet, chain, and double crochet into the same stitch creating a V shape, often used for airy and lacy designs.
Magic Ring (mr)
Technique used to begin crochet projects worked in rounds. It allows for an adjustable opening that can be tightened, ideal for hats and amigurumi.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc)
A double crochet worked around the post of the stitch from the previous row, from the front to the back, used for ribbing and cabled patterns.
Broomstick Lace Stitch
Uses a crochet hook and a dowel (or broomstick) to create large loops and lacey fabrics. Ideal for shawls and delicate items.
Puff Stitch
Constructed by yarn overs and pulling through several loops to create a puff of yarn on the fabric's surface, giving a project volume and softness.
Tunisian Crochet (also known as Afghan Stitch)
A technique combining knitting and crochet, worked on a long hook. Creates a sturdy and dense fabric, commonly used for blankets and garments.
Cluster Stitch
Similar to the bobble stitch, this involves partially completing several stitches and then joining them together, creating a clustered group, often used in patterns for texture.
Shell Stitch
Multiple stitches worked into the same space to create a shell-like shape. It's used for delicate looks in shawls, blankets, and edging.
Triple Crochet (tr)
Also known as treble crochet, this tall stitch creates a looser fabric with noticeable gaps, ideal for lace patterns and airy projects.
Larksfoot Stitch
Involves double crochet and chains to create a pattern that resembles the foot of a lark. The design is popular for colorful blankets and throws.
Crocodile Stitch
Creates a textured scale-like appearance by making a row of V-stitches followed by a row of textured stitches worked around the posts of the V-stitches.
Basketweave Stitch
A series of front and back post double crochets that create a textured pattern resembling the weave of a basket, often used in afghans and other cozy projects.
Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc)
Similar to the FPdc but worked from the back to the front around the post, creating a ribbed or textured look on the opposite side of the FPdc.
Bullion Stitch
Made by wrapping the yarn multiple times around the crochet hook and pulling through all the wraps, resulting in a spiral or coil look. It's used for decorative purposes.
Moss Stitch (also known as Linen or Granite Stitch)
A simple stitch pattern of alternating single crochets and chains to create a woven texture. This stitch is used for lightweight scarves and sweaters.
Waffle Stitch
Combination of double crochets and front post double crochets creating a textured, square design that looks like a waffle. Perfect for dishcloths and textured blankets.
Star Stitch
This intricate stitch creates a starburst or asterisk pattern, achieved by pulling loops through previous stitches. It's great for decorative pieces and warm garments.
