Bilateral
Involving two countries. Bilateral agreements or meetings are between two nations and can cover a range of issues including economic, trade, military, or diplomatic initiatives.
Multilateral
Involving more than two countries. Multilateral talks and agreements often require complex negotiations as they address the interests of many nations.
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)
An international organization of states that consider themselves not formally aligned with any major power bloc. NAM plays a role in diplomatic communications as it serves as a platform for countries to express their independent views.
Persona Non Grata
A person who is no longer welcome in a foreign country. This comes from a decision by the host country that can lead to the diplomat's recall or expulsion.
Extradition
The formal process by which one country transfers a suspected or convicted criminal to another country. It is based on international treaties or statutes, and has significant ramifications for diplomatic relations.
Diplomatic Immunity
A principle of international law that provides foreign diplomats with protection from legal action in the host country. It ensures that diplomats can do their work without fear of coercion or harassment by the host nation.
Chancery
The building that houses a diplomatic mission, such as an embassy. The chancery is often the location for political negotiations and meetings between diplomats and host government officials.
Protocol

Summit
A high-level meeting between heads of state or government, or officials at the highest level. Summits are meant to address major issues and find solutions that would be difficult in regular diplomatic channels.
Consulate
An office in a foreign country that represents the public administration of their home country. It's responsible for its nationals within its consulate district including services like visa processing and assistance to nationals.
Demarche
A formal diplomatic representation of one government's official position, views, or wishes on a given subject to an ally or enemy. Demarches are often used to protest or object to actions by a foreign government.
Communique
An official announcement or statement, especially one made to the media by a government or other organization usually after a meeting of heads of state or foreign ministers.
Détente
The easing of strained relations, especially in a political situation. Détente represents a mutual relaxing or easing between antagonistic nations usually after periods of tension or conflict.
Pouch
Diplomatic pouch are packages sent between an embassy and its home country. They are protected from search and seizure by international law and typically contain official correspondence and documents.
Attaché
A diplomat with specialized expertise attached to a diplomatic mission. An attaché usually focuses on specific areas such as military, cultural, or commercial affairs.
