Database Backup Strategies

Flashcards

Full Backup
A complete copy of the entire dataset and all files required to restore a database from scratch. Use case: Ensures a single restore point from which all data can be recovered.
Differential Backup
Backs up only the files that have changed since the last full backup. Use case: Useful for saving storage space while allowing a relatively fast restoration process.
Incremental Backup
Backs up only the files that have changed since the last any backup (full or incremental). Use case: Saves time and storage, but requires a longer time to restore because each set of incremental backups must be applied in sequence.
Mirror Backup
Creates an exact copy of the source data. Use case: Useful when real-time data replication is required, and the mirror can be used for direct data access.
Continuous Data Protection
Backs up data in real-time by automatically saving a copy of every change made to the data. Use case: Provides the ability to restore data to any point in time and is suitable for highly critical databases.
Snapshot Backup
Captures the state of a system at a particular point in time. Use case: Useful for quick restores because the system can be rolled back to the exact snapshot state.
