Facing
A piece of fabric that is used to finish raw edges on necklines, armholes, and other openings, lying on the inside of a garment to provide a clean finish.
Draping
A three-dimensional pattern making method where fabric is pinned and manipulated directly on a dress form to create the desired style.
Princess Seam
A long, rounded seam that is used in place of a dart to shape the garment, providing a fitted shape by curving around the contours of the body.
Nesting
A technique used in pattern making to efficiently arrange pattern pieces within the width of the fabric to minimize waste before cutting.
Notches
Small marks made on the edges of pattern pieces that serve as alignment guides when sewing pieces together, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
Flat Pattern
A technique where designs are created by developing the sloper into a new garment pattern on a flat surface, usually by manipulating darts and adding style lines.
Gore
A pattern piece that is typically triangular in shape and is used to add fullness to a skirt or dress, allowing for a more tailored fit.
Toile
A test garment made from inexpensive fabric, like muslin. It's created to evaluate the fit and silhouette of a pattern before cutting into the actual fabric.
Godet
A triangular piece of fabric inserted into a seam to add volume and fullness to a garment, particularly at the hem of skirts or sleeves.
Yoke
A pattern piece that forms part of a garment, typically at the shoulder area or around the hips in pants or skirts, used to support the weight and give structure.
Block Pattern
A basic pattern from which other patterns are developed. It is a simple construction without any design features, used to create new styles.
Sloper
A custom-fitted, basic pattern which is used to create designs by manipulating darts and adding style lines. It does not include seam allowances or design features.
Drafting
The process of creating a pattern from scratch by using measurements and drawing lines directly onto pattern paper, without the use of a pre-existing pattern.
Grading
The process of creating a range of sizes for a single pattern by systematically increasing or decreasing the dimensions of the original pattern.
Interfacing
A piece of fabric that is used to provide additional support, shape, and firmness to particular areas within a garment, such as collars, cuffs, and waistbands.
