Knitwear Finishing Techniques

Flashcards

Blocking
Steps: Lay the knitwear flat on a blocking mat, pin it to shape, and apply steam or moisture. Tips: Use rust-proof pins, measure the garment to ensure proper dimensions, and allow it to dry completely.
Mattress Stitch
Steps: Work vertically between two pieces of knitwear, alternating between sides and picking up the horizontal bars. Tips: Keep tension even, periodically check that the pieces align, and gently pull yarn to close the stitches invisibly.
Felt Finishing
Steps: Submerge the knitted piece in hot water, agitate until it felts, and rinse in cold water. Tips: Check sizing frequently, as felting is irreversible; use a gentle soap; and block to shape while damp.
I-Cord Edge
Steps: Cast on extra stitches for the I-cord, work them at the beginning or end of rows, and continue I-cord until the desired length is reached. Tips: Select a needle size that matches the main fabric, pull the yarn firmly across the back for a neat edge, and attach the I-cord neatly at corners.
Zipper Installation
Steps: Position the zipper, baste to secure it, and use a backstitch or sewing machine to sew in place. Tips: Use a zipper foot for sewing machines, ensure that the zipper lies flat, and check that it functions properly before finalizing the seam.
Weaving in Ends
Steps: Thread the yarn tail on a tapestry needle, weave it through the wrong side of the fabric, and trim the end. Tips: Avoid weaving in ends on high-stress areas, mimic the stitch pattern with your weaving, and leave a short tail to prevent unraveling.
Button Bands
Steps: Pick up stitches along the edge, work the band to the correct width, and create buttonholes. Tips: Space buttonholes evenly, make sure the band isn't too tight, and evenly pick up stitches to avoid puckering.
Crocheted Edging
Steps: Select an appropriate hook size, attach the yarn to the edge, and crochet the desired border pattern. Tips: Use a slip stitch to join new yarn neatly, ensure the crochet gauge complements the knit fabric, and block the edging if necessary.
Grafting
Steps: Prepare two pieces with live stitches, use a tapestry needle to thread stitches together following the knitting pattern, and secure the end neatly. Tips: Ensure both pieces have the same number of stitches, work loosely and then adjust tension, and understand the stitch pattern before grafting.
Tubular Bind-Off
Steps: Set up for a 1x1 ribbed edge, work the tubular bind-off in pattern, and weave in ends. Tips: Master the setup for a flat rib; keep tension even but loose enough for elasticity; and take your time for a professional finish.
Seaming
Steps: Align edges to be joined, use a yarn needle and a piece of yarn, and work from bottom to top. Tips: Ensure tension is not too tight or too loose, utilize mattress stitch for invisible seams, and weave in ends neatly.
Kitchener Stitch
Steps: Thread a tapestry needle with the working yarn, alternate between knit and purl stitches on the front and back needle, and pull snugly after several stitches. Tips: Practice the rhythm of 'knit off, purl on, purl off, knit on,' maintain an even tension, and ensure the right sides of the work are facing each other.
Picking Up Stitches
Steps: Insert a knitting needle along the edge where the stitches need to be picked up, knit into the edge, and continue to pick up all required stitches. Tips: Use the right size needle for the stitches picked up, be consistent with where you pick up stitches for a uniform edge, and spread the stitches as needed to prevent bunching.
Steam Pressing
Steps: Lay the garment flat, cover with a damp cloth, and apply a hot iron without pressing down too hard. Tips: Prevent direct contact with iron to avoid shine or scorching, test on a swatch first, and allow the steam to relax the fibers.
Applying a Ribbed Collar
Steps: Pick up stitches evenly around the neckline, work in ribbing for the desired length, and bind off flexibly. Tips: Use a smaller needle size for ribbing, ensure even distribution of picked-up stitches, and consider a stretchy bind-off.
