Flashcards
0/4
Autonomy
The principle of Autonomy refers to the respect for the patient's right to make their own decisions regarding their health care. For example, a patient must provide informed consent before any medical procedure can take place.
Nonmaleficence
Nonmaleficence means 'do no harm.' Health care professionals must avoid causing harm to patients. This principle is exemplified when a physician chooses not to administer a treatment that could have adverse side effects outweighing potential benefits.
Beneficence
Beneficence involves acting in the best interests of the patient and contributing to their health and well-being. For instance, recommending a necessary surgery to improve a patient's quality of life demonstrates this principle.
Justice
The principle of Justice in medical ethics refers to the fair distribution of health resources, respect for rights, and the treatment of individuals or groups equitably. An example is ensuring that there is no discrimination in the allocation of organ transplants.
