Backlighting
Creates depth and highlights the dancers' outline. It separates performers from the background and adds three-dimensionality.
Followspot
Aims spotlight on moving dancers to keep them in focus during solos or significant moments, enhancing visibility.
Gobo
A stencil or template placed inside or in front of a light source to shape the emitted light, used for creating patterns or textures on the stage.
Side lighting
Illuminates dancers from the sides, enhancing body contours and muscle definition, and providing contrast.
Top lighting
Lighting from above that can be used to bathe the stage in color or create a more neutral, well-lit space for performers.
Color wash
A broad sweep of light with a specific color to set the tone or mood of a scene, often to suggest time of day or location.
Cyclorama Lighting
Lights that illuminate a cyclorama (large curtain) at the back of the stage to create different times of day or atmospheric effects.
Dimming
The gradual reduction or intensification of light intensity to change scenes smoothly or focus attention, often used to transition between scenes or emotional states.
Footlights
Lights placed at the front edge of the stage floor; used historically to light the performers' faces, now often used as part of a broader design scheme.
Specials
Specific lights designated for a special purpose, such as highlighting a prop or creating a spotlight for a particular area on stage.
Strobe lighting
Flashes of light used to create a slow-motion effect on stage or to intensify the dramatic action.
Up-lighting
Light coming from below the dancer, creating dramatic shadows and accentuating movement, often used for thematic or supernatural effects.
Blackout
A sudden and complete cessation of stage lighting, often used to signal the end of a scene or an abrupt change.
Textured lighting
Light that has patterns or breakup to add visual interest to the stage or scenery, often simulating natural environments.
Crossfade
The gradual change from one lighting state to another, often used to smoothly transition between scenes or highlighting a change in time or mood.
