Attitude
A position where one leg is lifted and bent at the knee, either in front, to the side, or to the back.
Assemblé
A jump where the dancer springs off the ground, brings both legs together in the air, and lands on both feet.
Allégro
Fast and dynamic movements, typically involving jumps and often seen in solos or coda.
Arabesque
A position where the dancer stands on one leg with the other leg extended straight behind the body.
Adagio
A series of slow and fluid movements often performed as part of a pas de deux.
Balancé
A rocking step where the dancer shifts the weight from one foot to another, usually executed in triple time.
Brisé
A small beating step where the dancer jumps and beats the feet together before landing.
Changement
A jump from fifth position where feet change positions in the air and land with the opposite foot in front.
Rond de jambe
A circular movement of the leg, which can be executed on the ground (à terre) or in the air (en l'air).
Pas de chat
A jump resembling a cat's leap where knees are pulled up and feet arch under the dancer’s body.
Frappé
A sharp and small movement where the foot strikes the floor.
Fouetté
A whipped movement or series of turns on one foot with the working leg whipping in and out.
Cabriole
A jump where one leg is kicked into the air while the other leg meets it and beats it before landing.
Glissade
A gliding step that links other steps in ballet; often used as a lead into jumps.
Chassé
A gliding step where one foot chases the other foot out of its position; used as a travel step.
Plié
A bending of the knees over the toes while maintaining proper alignment.
Sauté
A jump off both feet, landing in the same position.
Grand battement
A large kick where one leg is lifted high in the air and then controlled back down.
Sous-sus
A relevé in fifth position where a dancer springs onto demi-pointe or pointe, squeezing the feet together.
Jeté
A leap from one foot to the other foot in which one leg appears to be thrown.
Soubresaut
A quick, tight jump from two feet to two feet, with legs squeezed together in the air.
Pas de bourrée
A linking step consisting of a series of small steps usually done in a pattern of back, side, front.
Pas de deux
A dance for two, typically a male and female dancer, involving intricate partnering.
Petit battement
A small beating action of the foot on the ankle of the supporting leg.
Port de bras
The movement or positioning of the arms in ballet, it translates to 'carriage of the arms.'
Sissonne
A jump from two feet to one foot, named after the creator of the step.
Tendu
A movement where the leg is extended along the floor until the foot points and only the toes touch the ground.
Piqué
A stepping movement onto a full pointe or a high demi-pointe, giving a pricked appearance.
Pirouette
A turn on one leg that usually begins from fourth or fifth position.
Relevé
A movement in which the dancer rises onto the toes (demi-pointe) or pointes.
Penché
A position in which the dancer leans forward, extending one leg up behind them to form a straight line with their body.
Coupé
A small intermediary step where one foot cuts the other away, taking its place.
Développé
A movement where the dancer's leg is drawn up to the knee of the supporting leg and then extended to an open position.
Échappé
A sliding step where the feet move from a closed to an open position.
Tour en l'air
A turn in the air, typically for male dancers, involving a 360-degree rotation before landing.
Tour jeté
A turning leap in which the dancer brushes one leg into the air, turns, and lands on the other leg.
