Forward Stroke
The primary stroke used to propel the canoe forward. Place the paddle blade near the bow and pull it back toward the hip, keeping the paddle as vertical as possible.
T-Rescue
A technique used to right a capsized canoe with the help of another paddler. The rescuer aligns their canoe perpendicular to the capsized boat and flips it back over.
Reverse Stroke
Used to move the canoe backward or to slow it down. Push the paddle blade forward from near the hip towards the bow, opposite of the forward stroke.
J-Stroke
A stroke that combines a forward stroke and a corrective stroke to keep the canoe going straight. Finish the forward stroke with a 'J' motion by twisting the paddle and pushing it outwards slightly.
Low Brace
A stabilizing stroke used to prevent capsizing. Flatten the paddle blade against the water's surface, keeping it close to the canoe.
Pry Stroke
The opposite of the draw stroke. Place the paddle blade close to the side of the canoe and push outwards, prying against the gunwale.
Sweep Stroke
A wide-ranging stroke that turns the canoe. Perform it by reaching the paddle out from the canoe and sweeping it in a wide arc from bow to stern.
Draw Stroke
Used to move the canoe sideways or to correct direction. Reach the paddle out to the side, then pull it in towards the canoe's centerline.
