Microcycle
A short training cycle, typically a week long, designed to focus on specific skills or goals in water polo.
Exclusion foul
A penalty in water polo where a player is excluded from the game for 20 seconds, typically for aggressive or illegal play.
Dry pass
A type of pass in water polo where the ball is thrown in such a way that it does not touch the water before reaching a teammate.
Eggbeater kick
A kicking technique in water polo used to maintain an upright position and provide propulsion and stability in the water.
Hole set
The center forward position in water polo; a key offensive player positioned near the opponent's goal.
Counterattack
A fast break in water polo, where a team transitions quickly from defense to offense, attempting to exploit a numerical advantage.
Weak side
The side of the water polo field of play opposite to where the ball is, often less defended and a good position to attack.
Shot clock
A timer counting down the time allowed for a team to take a shot at goal, usually 30 seconds in water polo.
Man-up situation
When a water polo team has a one-player advantage due to an opponent's exclusion foul, also known as a 'power play'.
Lob shot
A strategic shot in water polo where the ball is thrown in a high arc to drop over the goalie's head and into the goal.
