Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapon Tests in the Atmosphere, in Outer Space and Under Water
Better known as the 'Partial Test Ban Treaty (PTBT),' this treaty prohibits all test detonations of nuclear weapons except for those conducted underground and aims to prevent contamination of the Earth's environment by radioactive substances.
Moon Agreement
The Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies elaborates on the Outer Space Treaty to include provisions about the Moon and other celestial bodies. It emphasizes that the Moon should be used for peaceful purposes, and its resources should be considered the common heritage of all mankind.
Outer Space Treaty
The formal name is the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. It establishes that space shall be free for exploration and use by all nations and prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons in space. The treaty serves as a framework for international space law.
Rescue Agreement
The Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts, the Return of Astronauts and the Return of Objects Launched into Outer Space requires signatories to aid astronauts in distress and promptly return them to the launching state. It mandates that space-faring nations must also return any space objects that land on their territory to the originating country.
Liability Convention
The Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects establishes principles for liability for damage caused by space objects, whether this occurs on Earth or in space. It posits that the launching state is liable for damages.
Space Debris Mitigation Guidelines
These non-binding guidelines, developed by the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, aim to minimize the creation of space debris. Measures include limiting debris released during normal operations, minimizing the potential for on-orbit break-ups, and post-mission disposal.
Registration Convention
The Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space aims to assist in the identification of space objects. Nations must maintain a registry of space objects and must furnish details on each space object to the United Nations.
