Mosasaurus
A large, carnivorous, marine lizard, belonging to the mosasaurs. This reptile lived during the Late Cretaceous and is known to have been a dominant predator in its marine ecosystems.
Stenopterygius
A genus of ichthyosaur known for its streamlined body and long, narrow flippers. It lived during the Early Jurassic and is often found in European marine deposits.
Tylosaurus
One of the largest mosasaurs, characterized by an elongated snout. It lived in the Late Cretaceous and was a fierce predator of the North American seas.
Ichthyosaurus
A marine reptile that resembled both modern fish and dolphins. It thrived during much of the Mesozoic era and had worldwide distribution.
Archelon
The largest turtle ever discovered, from the Late Cretaceous period. It inhabited the shallow seas of North America and ate soft-bodied prey.
Pliosaurus
An apex marine predator of the Jurassic seas, this genus had powerful limbs and was one of the top predators of its environment.
Thalassomedon
A genus of plesiosaur with an extremely long neck, from the Late Cretaceous. It inhabited North America's Western Interior Seaway and had a diet likely consisting of slow-moving prey.
Nothosaurus
A type of marine reptile related to plesiosaurs, it lived during the Triassic period and had long, webbed feet suitable for paddling through the shallow coastal waters where it hunted.
Sauropterygia
A diverse group of aquatic reptiles that includes plesiosaurs and pliosaurs. They lived from the Triassic to the Cretaceous periods and are characterized by their flipper-like limbs.
Plesiosaurus
An aquatic, predatory reptile with a small head, a long neck, and a broad, turtle-like body. It lived in the early Jurassic period and inhabited ancient oceans around what is now Europe.
Elasmosaurus
A genus of plesiosaur with an extremely long neck that accounted for half of its body length. Lived during the Late Cretaceous period and its fossil remains have been found in North America.
Liopleurodon
A large pliosaur that was a top predator in the middle to late Jurassic seas. Notable for its massive jaws and teeth, it is thought to have lived in European oceans.
Dolichorhynchops
A relatively small plesiosaur from the Late Cretaceous, known for its short neck and extended jaws, residing primarily in North America's Western Interior Seaway.
Hainosaurus
One of the largest mosasaurs with a long body and a crocodile-like head. It lived in the Late Cretaceous and roamed the ancient seas of Europe and North America.
Kronosaurus
A short-necked pliosaur from the Early Cretaceous with a robust body and powerful jaws. It was likely a terror of the ancient seas in what is now Australia and South America.
