Contour
An outline, especially one representing or bounding the shape or form of something.
Medium
The materials that are used to create a work of art.
Scale
The size of an object in relation to another object or to a system of measurement.
Tone
The overall lightness or darkness of an artwork or a part of an artwork; also refers to a specific gray shade.
Composition
The arrangement and placement of visual elements within a work of art.
Chiaroscuro
The treatment and use of light and dark, especially by varying the contrast within a work of art to create the illusion of three-dimensionality.
Juxtaposition
Placing two or more elements close together or side by side, often to compare or contrast or to create an interesting effect.
Saturation
The intensity or purity of a color; the dominance of hue in the color.
Foreshortening
The visual effect or optical illusion that causes an object or distance to appear shorter than it actually is because it is angled toward the viewer.
Asymmetry
Lack of equality or equivalence between parts or aspects of something; lack of symmetry.
Value
The lightness or darkness of a color; it’s also referred to as tone.
Texture
The perceived surface quality of a work of art. It is the visual or tactile surface characteristics and appearance of an object.
Harmony
The quality of forming a pleasing and consistent whole. In art, harmony is achieved through the sensitive balance of variety and unity.
Perspective
Technique for depicting volumes and spatial relationships on a flat surface.
Hue
A color or shade; the attribute of colors that permits them to be classified as red, yellow, green, etc.
Motif
A recurring subject, theme, or idea in a work of art.
Negative Space
The space around and between the subjects of an image; often used to form interesting or artistically relevant shapes.
Contrast
The state of being strikingly different from something else in juxtaposition or close association.
Pattern
An underlying structure that organizes surfaces or structures in a consistent, regular manner.
Proportion
The relationship of two or more elements in a design and how they compare with one another regarding size, shape, and quantity.
