Color
An element of art made up of three properties: hue, value, and intensity. Color theory is significant as it influences moods and emotions in art and can be used for symbolic purposes.
Texture
The surface quality that can be seen and felt. Textures can be rough or smooth, soft or hard. Texture in art is significant as it adds a sensory dimension to visual experience.
Value
Refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. Value is significant because it can create depth, contrast, and emphasis in a composition.
Shape
An enclosed space defined by lines or contrast. Shapes can be geometric or organic, and they are significant for creating a sense of space and form in a composition.
Form
Refers to objects that are three-dimensional with length, width, and depth. Forms are significant in art as they give the illusion of space and volume within a piece.
Space
The area between and around objects. The space around objects is often called negative space; positive space refers to the space of the objects themselves. Space is significant as it can create the illusion of depth in a piece.
Line
A mark with greater length than width. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal; straight or curved; thick or thin. Lines are significant as they can outline shapes, lead the viewer's eye, or imply movement.
