Hatching
A shading technique that uses closely spaced parallel lines to create texture and value.
Cross-Hatching
Similar to hatching, but lines cross over one another, allowing for greater depth and texture.
Stippling
Uses dots to simulate varying degrees of solidity or shading; the closer the dots, the darker the area appears.
Scribbling
A free-form technique that creates texture and shading with random, curvy, looping lines.
Blending
Smoothing out the hard lines of graphite or colored pencils to create a seamless gradient.
Scumbling
A technique similar to scribbling that involves making continuous circular marks on the paper.
Contour Drawing
Drawing the outline and surface ridges of an object, focusing on capturing its mass and volume.
Gesture Drawing
Captures the feeling of motion and the form's basic gestures rather than intricate details; the focus is on movement.
Continuous Line Drawing
A drawing technique where the artist sketches the subject without lifting the pen or pencil from the paper.
Perspective Drawing
A technique used to represent three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface, using vanishing points and a horizon line.
Gridding
Using a grid as a reference to break down an image into smaller, more manageable pieces for accuracy.
Negative Space Drawing
Instead of drawing the object itself, you draw the space around the object to define its boundaries.
Sighting and Measuring
A technique used to compare relationships and proportions in a subject using a pencil or brush as a measuring tool.
Charcoal Drawing
A technique that uses charcoal sticks or pencils to create rich, velvety blacks and a range of tones.
Ink Washing
Involves applying a wash of ink to the paper to create different tones and depths, much like a watercolor paint.
