Cue
A signal that informs someone involved in a radio broadcast to take a specific action, such as starting a recording, speaking, or playing music. Cues ensure a seamless broadcast flow.
Segue
A smooth transition between two audio elements in a radio broadcast, such as songs or segments. This term is also used generally to describe a seamless transition in conversations and presentations.
Fade
Gradually reducing the volume of audio to transition between tracks or segments, or to end a program. It's a common effect used to smooth over transitions in radio.
PSA
Public Service Announcement. A message broadcast on radio (or other media) intended for public benefit. PSAs often promote awareness about health, safety, and community issues.
Dead Air
A period of silence on the radio during a broadcast, which is often considered a broadcasting error. Radio stations aim to have a continuous flow of content to keep the audience engaged.
Drop
A pre-recorded sound bite or snippet often used in radio shows to create variety, inject humor, or provide a signature sound for the show. Drops are typically short and can be sourced from movies, TV shows, interviews, or any other audio.
Hot Clock
A formatted template that illustrates the timing for various elements within an hour of radio broadcasting. It helps programmers and DJs to plan and maintain a consistent rhythm and structure throughout the broadcast.
Stinger
A short burst of music or sound used in radio broadcasting to signal a transition, emphasize a point, or create an emotional response. Stingers are typically energetic and attention-grabbing.
Voice-Tracking
Recording segments of a radio show in advance, rather than broadcasting live. It allows the host to simulate a live show while providing the freedom to avoid being in the studio in real-time.
Backtiming
A technique used by radio broadcasters to calculate the precise time a program must start in order for it to finish exactly on schedule. This is especially useful for live broadcasts leading up to timed segments like news at the top of the hour.
