Fold
To withdraw from a hand, usually because a player believes they cannot win.
Ante
A small, forced bet all players are required to make before a hand begins.
Flush
A hand where all the cards are of the same suit
Trick
A set of cards played by each player during a single round of a trick-taking game.
Discard
To remove a card from one's hand and place it in a discard pile.
Showdown
The point in a poker game when all remaining players reveal their hands to find out who wins.
Dealer
The player who shuffles and deals the cards, rotates among players in each round.
Cut
To split the deck into two parts after shuffling, usually done by an opponent of the dealer.
Draw
To take a card from the draw pile into one's hand.
Bidding
The process by which players take turns to declare how many points or tricks they anticipate to win.
Stock
The pile of undealt cards that players can draw from during the game.
Ace-High
A non-pair hand ranking in which the highest card is an Ace, with no straights or flushes.
Straight
A sequence of consecutive cards, regardless of suit.
Nut Hand
The best possible hand in a given situation in a poker game.
Suit
One of the categories into which the cards of a deck are divided: clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades in a standard deck.
Kicker
A card that does not directly take part in determining the rank of a hand but may be used as a tiebreaker.
Meld
A combination or set of cards that a player can show to score points according to the game rules.
Wild Card
A card that can be used to represent any other card a player chooses, often leading to stronger hands.
Burn Card
A card removed from the top of the deck and placed in the discard pile, unseen by the players.
Upcard
A card that is dealt face up on the table for all players to see.
Double Down
To double the original bet in exchange for committing to stand after receiving one more card.
Pinochle
A trick-taking game typically for two to four players and played with a 48-card deck.
Round
A unit of play consisting of each player playing a card in turn, often in trick-taking games.
Trump
A suit or a particular card that is arbitrarily given a higher rank in a particular game.
Hand
The cards that have been dealt to a player, which they use to play the game.
Bust
When a player exceeds the targeted score or value in a game, causing them to lose the round.
Cribbage Board
A scoring device used in the game of Cribbage that keeps track of points with pegs in holes.
Blind
A forced bet, usually put in by one or two players to the left of the dealer, before any cards are dealt.
Foundation
The starting pile in solitaire games where cards are played in ascending or descending order.
Full House
A hand consisting of three of a kind and a pair.
Tableau
The layout of cards on the table in card games, often in a particular pattern or sequence.
Call
To match the current highest bet in a betting round without raising.
Pair
Two cards of the same rank.
Poker Face
An expressionless face that does not reveal anything about the cards being held.
Four-Color Deck
A deck of cards where the suits are represented by four different colors, usually in online card games.
Canasta
A card game of the rummy family, played by forming combinations of cards into melds.
Muck
To fold or throw away a hand without showing it to the other players.
Bridge
A complex trick-taking game using a standard deck of cards and played by four players in two competing partnerships.
Overcall
To call after someone has already called following a bet or raise.
Quads
Four cards of the same rank.
Straight Flush
Five cards in numerical order, all of the same suit.
Raise
To increase the size of the current bet in a betting round.
Hearts
A trick-taking game where the objective is to avoid taking certain cards that carry penalty points.
Omaha
A popular variant of poker similar to Texas Hold'em but with each player starting with four hole cards.
Euchre
A trick-taking game with a dedicated deck, usually featuring four players playing in partnerships.
Hit
To request another card from the dealer, typically in Blackjack.
Whist
A classic English trick-taking game played by two pairs of players.
Stud Poker
A variant of poker with a mix of face-up and face-down cards dealt in multiple betting rounds.
Texas Hold'em
A popular variant of poker where players make the best five-card hand from two hole cards and five community cards.
Royal Flush
The strongest possible straight flush, with the ace, king, queen, jack, and ten all of the same suit.
