Scoring
Points are scored based on card values: trumps and court cards are worth points, while pip cards contribute less. The taker must reach a point target to win.
Defenders
Players who are not the taker work as a team to prevent the taker from fulfilling the contract.
Bidding
Players bid to decide who becomes the taker in a round, aiming to fulfill a contract by winning enough points in tricks.
Trumps
Trumps are used to win tricks and are ranked higher than the regular suit cards, with 21 being the highest and 1 the lowest.
Trumping
If a player cannot follow suit, they may play a trump card which wins over the highest card of the led suit unless a higher trump is played.
Bout
One of the three highest trumps (1, 21) or the Fool; these cards are crucial in determining the score threshold for the taker.
The Taker
The player who wins the bid and attempts to fulfill the proposed contract.
The Dog (Chien)
A set of cards that is set aside at the beginning of the game, which the taker adds to his or her hand after winning the bid.
Leading a Trick
The player who won the previous trick leads the next one by playing the first card.
Garde
A higher level contract in French Tarot, more challenging than Petite, with a higher score multiplier.
Petite
The lowest level contract in French Tarot, where the taker declares to win with the least number of points above the base score.
Announcements
Players can declare additional points by revealing sets or sequences of cards in their hands.
The Fool (Le Mat)
A special card that can be played to any trick but neither wins nor loses it. It's kept by the player who played it.
Objective
To win by accumulating the most points through declarations and card play.
Deck Composition
A 78-card Tarot deck is used, consisting of the standard 4 suits, trumps and the Fool.
Garde Sans
A contract where the taker declares to win without using the Dog, significantly increasing the game's difficulty and point multiplier.
Garde Contre
The highest level contract in French Tarot, where the taker plays against the Dog, aiming for the largest score multiplier.
Handling The Dog
The taker must take the Dog cards into their hand and then discard an equal number face down to form the new Dog, not including trumps or court cards.
Following Suit
When a card is led, other players must play a card of the same suit if they have it.
Number of Players
French Tarot requires 3 to 5 players to play.
