Flashcards
0/12
Aerating
Aerate the lawn once per year during the fall for cool-season grasses or late spring for warm-season grasses to improve soil structure and root growth.
Fertilizing
Apply fertilizer during the growing season, typically early spring and fall. Use a spreader and follow the manufacturer's recommended rates.
Grass Mowing
Perform weekly during the growing season. Adjust the mower height to cut grass at the ideal height, usually 2-3 inches to encourage root growth and discourage weeds.
Watering
Water deeply and infrequently, 1-1.5 inches per week. Early morning is the best time to water to reduce evaporation.
Reseeding
Reseed bare patches or overseed thin lawns in the fall for cool-season grass or spring for warm-season grass. Use a suitable seed for your climate and soil.
Mulching
Apply mulch to garden beds surrounding the lawn once a year in the spring or fall to suppress weeds and conserve moisture.
Soil Testing
Test soil every 2-3 years to determine pH and nutrient levels, and amend soil as recommended for optimal grass growth.
Topdressing
Topdress the lawn every 1-3 years, preferably in the fall, with compost or a soil mix to improve soil quality and promote healthy grass.
Weed Control
Apply pre-emergent herbicides in early spring and post-emergent herbicides as needed throughout the season. Always follow the product instructions.
Pest Management
Monitor for pests and apply appropriate controls, following Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment.
Leaf Cleanup
Remove leaves in the fall to prevent matting and fungal diseases. Mulch small amounts with a mower or rake and bag large amounts for composting.
Dethatching
Dethatch the lawn when the thatch layer is more than 1/2 inch thick, ideally in early spring or fall. Use a dethatching rake or machine.
