Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
A business approach that contributes to sustainable development by delivering economic, social, and environmental benefits for all stakeholders. CSR in fashion addresses ethical labor practices, fair trade, and environmental stewardship.
Intellectual Property
Legal concept which refers to creations of the mind for which exclusive rights are recognized, such as designs, artistic works, and symbols. Crucial for protecting the unique designs and branding of fashion items.
Patent
An exclusive right granted for an invention, which is a product or a process that provides a new way of doing something. In the fashion industry, patents protect functional aspects of designs, like a new fabric technology.
Dress Code
A set of written and, more often, unwritten rules with regard to clothing. Dress codes are important in the workplace and schools, and controversies can arise when they are considered discriminatory or restrictive of personal expression.
Consumer Protection Laws
Laws designed to ensure the rights of consumers as well as fair trade, competition, and accurate information in the marketplace. In the fashion industry, these laws protect from false advertising and defective products.
Cultural Appropriation
The adoption of elements of one culture by members of another culture. This is often seen as controversial in fashion when designs or symbols from minority cultures are used without permission or proper respect.
Fast Fashion
A contemporary term used by fashion retailers to express that designs move from catwalk quickly to capture current fashion trends. Ethical concerns include labor exploitation and environmental impact.
Fair Trade
A social movement aiming to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions and promote sustainable farming. In fashion, this includes ensuring fair labor practices and adequate pay for textile workers.
Sweatshops
A pejorative term for a workplace with very poor, socially unacceptable working conditions. The fashion industry has been criticized for its use of sweatshops, typically in developing countries, to produce clothing cheaply.
Counterfeiting
The production and sale of goods, often of inferior quality, under another's trademark without the owner's permission. This is a major issue in fashion, leading to lost sales and brand dilution.
Product Liability
The area of law in which manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, retailers, and others who make products available to the public are held responsible for the injuries those products cause. Important in fashion for issues like harmful materials or faulty products.
Greenwashing
The process of conveying a false impression or providing misleading information about how a company's products are more environmentally sound. Fashion companies may face accusations of greenwashing if they overstated their eco-friendly practices.
Trademark
A symbol, word, or phrase legally registered or established by use as representing a company or product. In fashion, it helps consumers identify the source of the goods and protects the brand's reputation.
Animal Rights in Fashion
Concerns surrounding the ethical treatment of animals in the fashion industry, particularly relating to the use of fur, leather, and exotic skins. Ethical fashion advocates for alternatives and humane practices.
Licensing
A business arrangement in which one company gives another company permission to manufacture its product for a specified payment. In fashion, this allows designers to expand their brands into new categories or regions.
Knockoffs
Products that copy the style of another brand's product without copying the brand itself. In fashion law, this relates to the balance between intellectual property rights and the encouragement of creative inspiration.
Textile Waste
Unwanted surplus material or garments arising from the manufacturing process or consumer discarding. The fashion industry faces challenges in reducing and managing textile waste sustainably.
Copyright
A form of protection given to the creators of original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works. In fashion, this protects original designs from being copied without permission.
Sustainability
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. In fashion, sustainability focuses on reducing environmental impact and promoting ethical labor practices.
Trade Dress
The visual appearance of a product or its packaging that signifies the source of the product to consumers. Trade dress is important in fashion to protect the overall look and feel of a product which may be associated with a particular brand.
