Organic Cotton
Cotton grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility and reduce the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers.
Biodegradable
A substance or object that is capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms.
Fair Trade
A social movement aiming to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions and to promote sustainability. It advocates for higher social and environmental standards.
Circular Fashion
A regenerative system in which garment use is maximized, and the products and materials are reused and recycled as much as possible.
Sustainable Materials
Materials used in products that have a lower impact on the environment, often because they are renewable, have a lower carbon footprint, or are biodegradable.
Vegan Fashion
Fashion products that do not involve animals in their production and do not contain any animal-derived materials such as leather, wool, or silk.
Slow Fashion
A movement towards mindful manufacturing, fair labor rights, natural materials, and longevity of garments. It encourages slower production schedules, fair wages, lower carbon footprints, and (ideally) zero waste.
Zero Waste Fashion
A design technique that eliminates textile waste at the design stage. It encompasses more sustainable patterns that make use of the entire width of the fabric.
Sustainable Dyeing
The process of coloring textiles in a manner that uses less water, energy, and chemicals, or uses natural dyes to minimize environmental impact.
Water Footprint
The total volume of freshwater used to produce the goods and services used by an individual, community, or business.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
A technique to assess the environmental impact of a product through its entire life cycle from raw material extraction through to disposal or recycling.
Carbon Footprint
The total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Capsule Wardrobe
A collection of a few essential items of clothing that do not go out of fashion and can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.
Cradle to Cradle
A sustainable business strategy that models human industry on nature's processes, in which materials are viewed as nutrients circulating in healthy, safe metabolisms.
Recycled Materials
Materials that have been reprocessed from recovered (or reclaimed) materials and made into new products.
Eco-Fashion
Fashion that aims to reduce its impact on the environment, using organic raw materials, as well as sustainable production processes.
Ethical Fashion
Fashion that values fair treatment of people, animals, and the planet. It focuses on both the social and environmental impact of fashion.
Upcycling
The process of transforming by-products, waste materials, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.
Greenwashing
The practice of making unsubstantiated or misleading claims about the environmental benefits of a product, service, technology or company practice.
Bamboo Fabric
A natural textile made from the pulp of bamboo grass. It is considered sustainable due to the fast growth and low impact of bamboo cultivation.
