Haute Couture
A French term meaning 'high sewing' or 'high dressmaking' that refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted fashion. Haute Couture garments are made from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail by the most experienced and capable sewers.
Draping
The process of positioning and pinning fabric on a dress form to develop the structure of a garment design. It's an essential step in haute couture to achieve the desired silhouette.
Finishing
The final process of making a garment that includes all the detailed work and embellishments after the main assembly. Haute couture finishing is executed with very high standards to ensure the highest level of quality.
Croquis
A quick and sketchy drawing of a live model. Fashion designers use croquis as a template to sketch their clothing designs.
Moulage
A design technique where a garment is draped directly on a mannequin or body to create a pattern. It's a fluid, three-dimensional form of pattern making.
Fitting
A session in which a garment is tried on a body to see if it fits properly and where any necessary adjustments are marked. Fittings are vital in haute couture to ensure a perfect fit.
Made-to-Measure
A type of service in the fashion industry where clothing is constructed to fit an individual customer's specific body measurements and preferences.
Flou
A term used in French haute couture to describe light and flowy garments that give a soft and ethereal look, typically crafted in the atelier by skilled artisans.
Prêt-à-Porter
French for 'ready-to-wear', this term refers to factory-made clothing, sold in finished condition and standardized sizes, in contrast to haute couture.
Couturier
Used to describe a male fashion designer who is directly engaged in the making of high fashion. The female equivalent is 'couturière'.
Toile
A prototype of a garment made by a fashion designer to test a pattern. It's usually made in a cheaper fabric than the final garment.
Appliqué
A decorative design made of one material sewn over another. Used in haute couture for adding dimension and artistic details to garments.
Atelier
The workshop or studio of a professional artist in the fields of fashion or haute couture. It's a place of both creation and craftsmanship where haute couture garments are made.
Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture
The regulating commission that determines which fashion houses are eligible to be true haute couture houses.
Embroidery
The craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. In haute couture, embroidery is often very elaborate and a key element in custom pieces.
