Unarmed Combat
Refers to all fighting scenes without weapons. Used when the characters are meant to come across as having a physical altercation without tools or weapons.
Roll
A choreographed movement where the actor performs a roll on the ground to dissipate energy. Used to safely show characters getting thrown, evading, or transitioning between levels.
Punch
A staged closed fist strike, which simulates contact without causing harm. Common in fight scenes to show aggression or resolve conflicts.
Footwork
The movement of the feet to maintain balance and create realistic and safe combat scenes. Used consistently in various forms of stage combat to portray effective fighting.
Parry
A defensive move used to deflect an oncoming attack, typically in swordplay. Essential in stage combat to show the skill and strategy of characters in a duel.
Choreography
The sequence of movements and actions designed for stage combat. Used to plan and safely execute fight scenes.
Sell a Hit
Acting technique to make a fake hit look like it actually made contact. Integral in stage combat to enhance the realism of a fight without causing harm.
Breakaway Objects
Props designed to break apart easily without causing injury. Used for scenes involving the destruction of items within the context of a fight.
Thrust
An offensive movement aiming to 'stab' the opponent with the pointy end of a weapon. Used in stage combat to portray an attempt to wound or attack another character.
Hair Pull
A simulated act of one character pulling another’s hair. Used to show a struggle between characters without causing real pain or hair loss.
Fall
A choreographed drop to the ground that protects the performer. Used to show a character being thrown down, tripped, or otherwise losing their balance.
Rapier and Dagger
A type of stage combat using a thin, light sharp-pointed sword and a dagger. It is used in scenes requiring a more classical or renaissance style of fighting.
Grapple
A close combat movement where performers appear to wrestle or hold each other in a struggle. Used to show characters in a physically intensive confrontation.
Sword and Shield
Combat style involving the use of a sword in one hand and a shield in the other. Used in scenes depicting medieval or ancient battles.
Slap
A staged open-handed hit to a person's face, designed to be safe. Used in tense dramatic scenes to portray a character’s anger or frustration.
