Tech Rehearsal
A rehearsal that combines both the technical elements of a production (like lighting, sound, scenery, and props) with the actors' performances. It aims to synchronize technical components with the action on stage.
Sitzprobe
A seated rehearsal where the performers sing with the orchestra or accompaniment for the first time, focusing on integrating the musical score with the vocal performance without blocking or acting.
Line-Through
A rehearsal technique where actors run their lines with each other without acting or blocking. The purpose is to reinforce memory, clarify diction and enunciation, and provide a focused opportunity for line accuracy.
Run-Through
A type of rehearsal where the performance is practiced from start to finish without stopping. It helps in building stamina, understanding the flow of the play, and identifying transitions between scenes.
Final Dress
The last dress rehearsal before the opening night, usually treated as a full performance with all technical and performance elements in place. This is the last chance to make adjustments and fix any outstanding issues.
Italian Run
A speed-through rehearsal where actors deliver their lines as quickly as possible without physical acting or technical elements. This exercise helps to solidify memorization and increase fluency with the text.
Notes Session
A meeting after rehearsal where the director and sometimes the creative team provide feedback to the actors and crew about their performance, with the aim of improving and refining the show.
Table Work
An early rehearsal process where the cast and director sit and go through the script, discussing the play's meaning, character development, and motivations. It helps to ensure everyone has a unified vision before staging begins.
Stumble-Through
An early run-through of a play where actors attempt to perform with minimal stops, despite potential mistakes. This approach helps the cast and crew get a sense of the flow and make further refinements.
Cold Reading
An audition technique where actors read from a script or perform a monologue with little to no preparation. It tests the actor's ability to interpret material in a short amount of time and showcases their natural acting talent.
Dry Tech
A technical rehearsal without actors present, allowing the crew to practice cues and transitions. This type of rehearsal focuses solely on the technical aspects without the complications of working with the cast.
Blocking
The precise staging of actors in order to facilitate the performance of a play, ballet, film or opera. It is crucial for ensuring clear sightlines for the audience and creating dynamic stage pictures.
Places Call
A signal given by the stage manager indicating it is time for actors to take their positions on stage before the performance starts or after an intermission.
Speed-Through
A rehearsal technique similar to an Italian run, where actors perform the play at a much faster pace than normal, focusing on quick recall of lines and cues, and helping to identify any weak spots in memorization or performance.
10 Out of 12
An intensive tech rehearsal schedule where the cast and crew are in the theater for 12 hours, with 10 hours of work and 2 hours of breaks, often used in professional settings to ensure ample technical preparation time.
Cue-to-Cue
A type of rehearsal where the actors and technical crew go from one important technical cue to the next, skipping the intervening dialogue and action. It is essential for fine-tuning the technical aspects of the performance.
Prompt Book
The production book that contains the script with all the director's notes, blocking, and cues. Used by stage managers and assistant directors to ensure the performance runs smoothly.
Dress Rehearsal
A complete run-through of the production, with all elements including costumes, makeup, lighting, sound, and action. This rehearsal is used to fine-tune the performance and is as close to the actual performance as possible.
Wandelprobe
A German term for a 'walking rehearsal,' where actors move through their blocking with the orchestra playing, in order to practice the integration of music and motion on stage without full costume or tech aspects.
Fight Call
A focused rehearsal for scenes involving physical combat or stage violence to ensure safety and accuracy. It is typically done before each performance and is essential for the routine practice of these sequences.
Off-Book
The point in rehearsal when the actors must have their lines memorized and no longer use their scripts. This allows for a more natural performance and enables actors to fully engage with the blocking and their fellow actors.
Paper Tech
A meeting between the director, stage manager, and various technical departments where they go through the script and discuss and document all the technical cues. It is a crucial preparatory step before actual tech rehearsals.
