Outline
Creation of a structured summary of the play's plot, characters, and scenes. This acts as a roadmap for writing the full script.
Conceptualization
In this stage, the playwright comes up with the idea or concept for the play, considering the message, theme, and potential impact on audiences.
Research
The playwright gathers information relevant to the play's subject matter, which may include historical context, relevant literature, or interviews with experts.
Revising
Reviewing and altering the initial draft to improve the dialogue, structure, and overall flow of the play. Feedback from readings may inform this stage.
Drafting
Writing the first version of the script, transforming the outline into dialogue and stage directions.
Workshopping
Actors perform parts of the script while the playwright observes and makes notes for further revisions. This process can include table reads and staged readings.
Production
The final script is used in the production of the play, with a director, actors, and a creative team bringing it to life on stage.
