Goal Judgement
A goal is scored when the ball completely crosses the goal line. Officials use sound to judge goals, and their decision is final. Scoring requires strategic throwing and teamwork.
Blocking Technique
Players use their bodies to block the ball from entering the goal. They must react quickly to the sound of the ball and position themselves accordingly, often utilizing a sliding or diving motion to cover as much space as possible.
Orientation in the Playing Area
Players use tactile markers on the floor (such as string) to orient themselves on the court. It is essential to frequently touch these markers to maintain proper positioning and orientation.
Quietness Rule
During play, silence is required in the venue to allow players to hear the ball. Spectators, coaches, and teammates must remain quiet while the ball is in play to enable players to concentrate and react based on sound.
Eye Shades Check
Officials are required to check players' eye shades before the game and after each goal to ensure no one can see. This maintains the integrity of the game, as all players must rely on hearing alone.
Game Duration
A standard goalball game consists of two 12-minute halves with a 3-minute break in between. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins.
Throwing Technique
Players must throw the ball with an underhand motion, ensuring it touches the floor within their own landing zone. It is crucial to practice rolling the ball smoothly and with precision to avoid penalties.
High Ball Penalty
A high ball penalty is given when a player throws the ball and it lands on the opponent’s half of the court without touching the thrower’s landing zone or neutral zone. This results in a penalty throw for the opposing team.
Blindfolds Usage
All players must wear blindfolds during play to ensure fairness, as Goalball is designed for visually impaired athletes. It is important to put on the blindfold securely and check frequently that it remains in place.
Ten-Second Rule
Players have a maximum of ten seconds to throw the ball after it has touched their hands. Failing to do so results in a penalty, giving the opposing team a chance for a penalty throw.
Ball Specifications
The goalball must weigh 1.25 kilograms and have a circumference of approximately 76 centimeters. It has bells inside so players can track its movement by sound.
Court Dimensions
A goalball court is 18 meters long and 9 meters wide, with the goals spanning the width of the court. Knowing the court dimensions helps players position themselves and strategize their movements and throws.
Long Ball Penalty
A long ball penalty occurs when a player throws the ball and it lands beyond the opponent's landing zone without first touching it. The subsequent penalty throws may decide the outcome of the game, making accurate throws critical.
Team Composition
Each goalball team consists of three main players and up to three substitutes. All players must be visually impaired and are classified according to their level of vision. Teamwork and communication are vital.
Timing of Throws
Players must coordinate throws to ensure their team retains possession and puts pressure on the opposition. Throwing too quickly can result in turnovers and lost opportunities, while hesitating too long leads to penalties.
