Moral Development Theories
3
Flashcards
0/3
Lawrence Kohlberg
Developed a theory of moral development that includes six stages, which are grouped into three levels: pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional. Adolescents typically navigate through the conventional level, where they adhere to societal norms and laws.
Jean Piaget
Proposed a theory of moral development that is part of his larger work on cognitive development. His theory includes two main stages of moral understanding: heteronomous morality and autonomous morality, typically observable in younger children and older children respectively.
Carol Gilligan
Challenged Kohlberg's theory by introducing an ethic of care as an alternative to the justice perspective that she felt dominated Kohlberg's model. She argued that moral development in women is focused more on care, relationships, and responsibility to others.
