Arctic Oscillation
While not a jet stream itself, the Arctic Oscillation's positive and negative phases influence the position and strength of the polar jet stream, thereby altering weather patterns across the northern hemisphere.
Polar Jet Stream
A fast flowing ribbon of air at the altitude of the tropopause which separates the cold polar air from warm tropical air, influencing the formation of storms and weather fronts.
Subtropical Jet Stream
This jet stream exists at a higher altitude than the polar jet stream, forming between the Hadley cell and Ferrel cell, and affects the formation of subtropical weather patterns.
Tropical Easterly Jet Stream
Positioned over the tropical regions, particularly during summer, it can contribute to the development of monsoon patterns and cyclonic storms.
