Ellipsoidal (Condyloid) Joint
Permits movement in two planes without rotation. Examples are the wrist joint and metacarpophalangeal joints for the fingers.
Ball-and-Socket Joint
This joint allows for rotational movement and a wide range of motion. Examples include the shoulder and hip joints.
Saddle Joint
Allows movement back and forth and side to side, but limited rotation. An example is the thumb joint (carpometacarpal joint of the thumb).
Pivot Joint
Allows rotational movement around a single axis. An example is the joint located at the first and second cervical vertebrae, enabling head rotation.
Hinge Joint
Permits movement in one plane, functioning like a door hinge. Examples include the knee and elbow joints.
Gliding Joint
Allows bones to glide past each other in any direction along the plane of the joint. Examples include the intercarpal joints in the wrist.
