Global Hunger Index (GHI)
An index that comprehensively measures and tracks hunger globally. It is calculated by combining four indicators: undernourishment, child wasting, child stunting, and child mortality.
Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS)
A scale that measures the degree of food insecurity in the household over a specified period. It asks questions related to anxiety about food supply, insufficient quality, and insufficient intake and physical consequences.
Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU)
The percentage of the population that is undernourished, indicating a lack of access to adequate food for a healthy life. It is measured through national surveys that assess food availability, access, and utilization.
Crop Yield
The measurement of the amount of agricultural production harvested per unit of land area, such as kilograms per hectare. It is crucial for assessing food availability.
Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES)
A metric that captures the individual's reported experiences of food insecurity. Measurement involves surveys with questions about food-related anxiety, insufficiency, and deprivation.
Food Affordability
An economic metric which calculates the cost of a basic food basket relative to income or the general price level. Helps to evaluate whether people can afford the food they need for a balanced diet.
Food Consumption Score (FCS)
A metric which combines dietary diversity and food frequency to reflect nutritional adequacy of the household's diet over the previous week.
Food Production Index
An index that measures the changes in the volume of production of food crops compared to a base year. It reflects the overall growth in the agriculture sector.
Dietary Diversity Score (DDS)
A score that reflects the number of different food groups consumed over a reference period, often 24 hours. It's a proxy for nutrient adequacy of the diet.
Food Expenditure Share
The proportion of household spending that goes toward food purchases. A high share can indicate economic vulnerability, as it implies less flexibility in household budgets for non-food items.
Gross Food Imports
The total value of food products imported into a country, which affects the national food supply and can signal dependency on external food sources.
Agricultural Value Added per Worker
The net output of the agricultural sector after adding up all outputs and subtracting intermediate inputs. It is the average contribution of each agricultural worker to the agricultural GDP.
Emergency Food Aid Deliveries
A count of the amount of food aid provided to regions or populations in crisis, reflecting the response to food insecurity during emergencies.
Gross Food Exports
The total value of food products exported from a country, reflecting its position in the global food market and contribution to global food supply.
Child Stunting Rate
The percentage of children under the age of five who have low height-for-age, reflecting chronic undernutrition long-term exposure to inadequate nutrition.
