New Moon
The Moon is between Earth and the Sun, making it invisible from Earth. Occurs approximately every 29.5 days.
Waning Crescent
The last visible phase before another New Moon, with the illuminated portion decreasing. Occurs approximately every 29.5 days.
Waning Gibbous
The Moon starts to lose its illumination after the Full Moon, but more than half is still lit. Occurs approximately every 29.5 days.
First Quarter
Half of the Moon's disk is illuminated, and the phase is one quarter of the way through its cycle. Occurs approximately every 29.5 days.
Waxing Crescent
A sliver of the Moon becomes visible after the New Moon, with illumination increasing. Occurs approximately every 29.5 days.
Full Moon
The entire disk of the Moon is illuminated, opposite the Sun. Occurs approximately every 29.5 days.
Last Quarter
Also known as the Third Quarter. Half of the Moon's disk is illuminated, now three quarters of the way through its cycle. Occurs approximately every 29.5 days.
Waxing Gibbous
More than half of the Moon is illuminated, but it is not yet full. Occurs approximately every 29.5 days.
